Toronto’s big city lights blinded University of Guelph-Humber student Kylie Precepa after she moved from Sault St. Marie to attend Humber College for early childhood education.
Besides focusing on school, Precepa is on the search for musical opportunities after leaving behind a lengthy music career in the Soo playing festivals and in local pubs as the lead singer for several indie-folk bands.
Precepa is one of many Humber students performing at the live music event hosted by Humber’s bar LinX Lounge today until they run out of performers.
What LinX is calling “Live Music Friday” was created for Humber musicians to network their talents to fellow students, as well as change up the bar’s atmosphere.
“I’m trying to balance school and music so this is perfect because I’m already here, it’s not like I have to go half-way across the city,” Precepa said.
Students are welcome to join the event at any time and take a turn at impressing their peers.
“We have a great stage and a great sound system so they can literally do anything whether that’s performing an instrument or singing,” said manager of LinX Daniela Trozzolo.
Some say nothing goes better with a savoury cheeseburger poutine paired with an ice-cold pint than the comfort live music right down the hall.
“For students, it’s a great chance to listen to cool music, have a beer and maybe make friends,” said second-year film and TV Production student Miguel Guerrero.
The event will have a mixture of diverse acts open to any genre in hopes of creating an environment for all students to enjoy.
LinX staff encourage students to keep an open mind and have consideration for performers.
“It can be a tough crowd, (and) our students might not be as receptive, but I think that if you can get a few claps from a LinX audience, you’re doing a great job,” Trozzolo said.
Trozzolo said if the event is a hit, LinX would host a live music event every Friday.
